Definitions of Divisions

Lower Recreational
The Lower Recreational level is composed of fairly new players with little to no experience in organized volleyball. Many times at this level, the ball will be sent back over on one. Referees will not be calling “bad hands” or “lifts” unless the ball is blatantly caught and thrown.  Jump serving is NOT allowed at this level. Aggressive spiking is NOT allowed at this level.
Upper Recreational
Similar to the Lower Recreational, this division is still recreational.  Some players may have some experience playing and may be years beyond their prime or “chronologically gifted”.  Referees will not be calling “bad hands”.  Some teams may have “setters” in the front row, but it is not expected and calls will be reduced accordingly. Open hand scoops of the ball will be called lifts.  There is still NO jump serving allowed at this level.  In this level, a more experienced player may be playing, but they should not be the entire offense or serving unreturnable balls. You do not belong in this division if you have players that:
1) are spiking consistently/effectively where other team is unable to defend it.
2) are calling and running plays on offense.
3) have played in college/ other high level competitive volleyball as an adult.
Lower Intermediate
The lower intermediate is a tricky division as it catches all the teams “graduated” from recreational level, but don’t feel they would be competitive at the upper levels.  There may be a few players with experience, spiking occurs regularly and serving will have added difficulty. This is not an invitation for 3-4 upper level players to play with their wives/recreational friends and dominate. Referees will be calling scooped balls as lifts and double contacts on mangled balls or bad sets creating an unfair advantage (jump set an unreachable ball or tried to set forward and it went backward).  If your team has only lost a few games all session or won the "A" bracket of lower intermediate and could be competitive at the upper intermediate level, that move may be implemented -- Don’t qualify/bring in upper level subs for playoffs if you're worried this will happen to you.
Upper Intermediate
This division is typically the highest that is offered in our 6’s leagues.  This division will often have good high school and even college players playing in it.  Teams that have moved up from the lower intermediate will also be here.  Serving, hitting/blocking and level of play is increased.
Power
Typically only available in the 4s league, this is an open level for the best of teams you can make.  It is the top level of competition offered.

Please note:

*If players consider themselves “rusty” or “just there to drink”, it is not a proper excuse to play down a level.  If you need a sub, make sure they are aware of the level you are in.

**The KAV prides itself on creating the best and most competitive playoffs in any available leagues.  It is an added expense in prizes for more winners; however, we want everyone to have a chance to play competitively or even win at their level.  To accomplish this, we will break apart divisions into A and B brackets when feasible based on our discretion.
